ATTENTION: TUMBLR USERS IN NORTH CAROLINA
The North Carolina General Assembly has introduced a constitutional amendment to the North Carolina State Constitution which would “provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”
Voting on the amendment is at the 2012 PRIMARY on MAY 8th, not in November.
Aside from the obvious discriminatory nature of the amendment, it is poorly worded and thought out and would harm the rights of ALL couples.
Remember to vote ‘AGAINST’ this amendment.

i’ve been a fan of austin kleon’s work for a few years now, and i was eager to get my hands on his latest book, “steal like an artist”. billed as a “manifesto for creativity in the digital age”, it’s chock full of great quotes, illustrations, and advice on how to follow your interests and embrace your influences. and though the title says “artist”, the material inside is applicable to any medium. it’s perfect for creatively-frustrated creative types (which i know many of you are), and i loved it so much that i want to give you a copy!
what you’ll get

your very own copy of austin kleon’s “steal like an artist”, shipped anywhere in the world, at no cost to you.

the rules

you have until may 1st to enter. every reblog is considered one entry (likes don’t count, nor do replies). i’ll use random.org to choose three winners. keep your inbox open so i can notify you if you win. if a winner doesn’t respond within 48 hours, a new one will be chosen.

good luck!
p.s. if giveaways aren’t your thing, you can always pick up a copy on amazon. p.p.s. this giveaway is not affiliated with or endorsed by tumblr or my employer, new york media.

The bits and pieces I’ve read of this book (including the original speech it is based on) are fascinating. If I can’t win a copy, I fully intend to purchase one.

[Shaun Tan]

For reblogging purposes, because he’s awesome and deserves it….

Text

So I know it’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these (see my previous entries here, here, and here), so I figured I’d return to it with something really special, and relatively unknown to Americans. Shaun Tan is an Australian illustrator whose books are extremely popular in Australia and New Zealand. Somehow though, even in working in a children’s bookstore, I had never heard of him in the States.

His books are like graphic novels, yet not, because they have no words in them at all.  I’m think Brian Selznick probably got a lot of inspiration from Tan, only added the different (and also unusual) convention of switching between regular prose and silent illustration.

The other delightful quality of Tan’s work is the surreal worlds he creates that are totally believable. A random invented creature jumps out of a rubbish bin, or paper cranes actually fly, and you in no way question why.

Anyway, on to the goodness:

6 Writing Tips From John Steinbeck

1. Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the 400 pages and write just one page for each day, it helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.
2. Write freely and as rapidly as possible and throw the whole thing on paper. Never correct or rewrite until the whole thing is down. Rewrite in process is usually found to be an excuse for not going on. It also interferes with flow and rhythm which can only come from a kind of unconscious association with the material.
3. Forget your generalized audience. In the first place, the nameless, faceless audience will scare you to death and in the second place, unlike the theater, it doesn’t exist. In writing, your audience is one single reader. I have found that sometimes it helps to pick out one person—a real person you know, or an imagined person and write to that one.
4. If a scene or a section gets the better of you and you still think you want it—bypass it and go on. When you have finished the whole you can come back to it and then you may find that the reason it gave trouble is because it didn’t belong there.
5. Beware of a scene that becomes too dear to you, dearer than the rest. It will usually be found that it is out of drawing.
6. If you are using dialogue—say it aloud as you write it. Only then will it have the sound of speech.

Interspecies Intermingling of the Day: Samantha, a 47-year-old western lowland gorilla at the Erie Zoo, has been all alone since her companion Rudy passed away in 2005. Zookeepers decided to try and alleviate her loneliness by giving her a pet: Panda the Dutch rabbit.
Initially cautious, the keepers introduced them in increments before leaving Panda alone with Samantha (keeping an escape hatch open just in case). But their concern quickly abated as the two took to each other right away.
Samantha’s handlers say they aren’t worried as she’s never expressed anything but fondness toward Panda. Still, they say the bunny is more than capable of holding his own.
“He’s fearless,” says the zoo’s chief executive, Scott Mitchell. “He’s not threatened by her. More often they’re closer together than they are farther apart.”

I Know That Feel, Bro by Chris Gerringer

Chris Gerringer knows that feel. And it turns out, several different characters from across the geek globe know that feel too, linking them in ways that brings them all closer together. Whether it’s mourning dead parents with Batman and Harry Potter, tight living spaces with Pikachu and Aladdin’s Genie, or the demoted scientific status of the Triceratops and Pluto. I know most (hip) people have probably seen some of these before, but Chris’ series is so endearing and so right fucking on that it deserves one last look. I hope you know that feel too.

  • (Ralph and I are watching a movie)
  • Me: Wait... so he died? That's how it ends?
  • Ralph: You don't know that. It's an open ending. It's supposed to be ambiguous.
  • Me: No, he obviously drowned.
  • Ralph: You don't know that. What if he founded a mermaid colony?
